About The Blühen Studio

The Artist

.Fiber Artist Amber Roper (she/her) was born & raised in the heart of East London to working-class parents; both of mixed ethnicity. From an early age, she was encouraged to explore her individuality and creativity; whilst her artistic abilities were nurtured & championed.

Upon completing her further education, she participated in a workshop led by UAL Insights. She was advised to consider applying to study at the prestigious Central Saint Martins University of the Arts in London, which she did and was accepted onto the BA (Hons) Textile Design Degree. She later graduated with first class honours in her specialist pathway of woven design.

Amber's art expression is through the use of colour, composition & texture. These themes le at the forefront of all of her artwork.

"I am a colourist fascinated by textures. My art process is a celebration of craftsmanship & colour in the medium of fiber. Being bold with colour and experimental with yarn textures brings a playful element to my creation process!" - AMBER ROPER

The Studio

The Blühen Studio was founded in 2017. The name pays homage to part of Amber’s mixed heritage of German, Jamaican & English. In German, it translates as ‘flourish’ and ‘blossom,’ which runs true within Amber’s approach to all of her artwork.

The Blühen Studio brings a fresh approach to fiber art through the use of colour, expressive wrapping techniques & yarn selections. Working intuitively, Amber builds up depth and density organically in her textile art that results in unexpected compositions. She starts each artwork with no design plan in place before creating: working towards a finalised design would spoil the endless possibilities and stunt the organic nature and style of her work.

Artworks created by The Blühen Studio were discovered by a representative from Condé Nast, and were later featured in the World of Interiors Magazine. More recently, Amber was invited to showcase some of the studio’s work and create a piece to be exhibited on the popular BBC television show ‘Home Is Where the Art Is.’

Saatchi Art named Amber as one of 35 artists to watch for the annual year of 2020, and in 2022 she was named in Elle magazine as an a “must have” by the talented, award-wining author Bernadine Evaristo, who is a fan & collector of The Blühen Studio artwork. In addition to this, world-renowned, trend forecasting company WGSN used The Blühen Studio as a source of inspiration for forthcoming trends and designs (s/s23).
